Did you see/hear about the new brain research that got a lot of news play last week? It was about the middle-aged brain--and what stood out to me was the researchers defined middle-age as 40-68 years old! And we have retirement set at 65 still!!

On a related note it was interesting to learn last week from one of the Local School Board Presidents that among the obstacles the schools face in providing healthier foods to their students is that the supplier base servicing schools provides very few healthy food options. It's probably a good bet that the products they do offer would be more expensive just due to lower volumes.
Sounds like a "Chicken or the Egg" situation! (no pun intended)

We have a field in our back yard too with lots of paths around it (mostly from golf carts and 4-wheelers) but there is nothing better then walking back there with my two kids. Not only do you get healthy exercise, but healthy conversation as well. Keep up those walks Pat! My 8-year-old rides his bike while his sister and I walk. He checks in on us quite often!

Thanks, Judy! In my compartmentalizing way, I can check off the walk, two gym trips and wheat free so far. Though last night I could have eaten half that tray of ziti!

Wow, I'd really love to see us take on something that ambitious. I'd dedicate a spot on the home page of Chelsea Update to specific suggestions/local events, (important to me that they're local, and not just rehashes of national/general advice) and I wouldn't mind being involved in planning/volunteering related to such a project! Great stuff.

I agree. It is not one person's role in life to judge anothers. From somone who is overweight and does not always make the wisest-healthiest choices. I think we need to concentrate on the "Little Victories" and remember - One step at a time!! I am excited about the opportunities for support, encouragement and guidance that the Chelsea Area Wellness Center will be bringing to the Stockbridge community.

Great investigative reporting, but you left out an important source of empty calories - soda. Its less expensive than milk, juice and bottled water. That's why some health policy experts favor a small tax on carbonated beverages.

I guess I'd better step up!

I will write down every bit of food that goes into my mouth for the month of March. I'm nervous about what I'll discover...
